The analysis of historic femme icons in reggaeton highlights how women like Ivy Queen and Glory paved the way in a male-dominated industry by asserting presence, voice, and authority within the genre. Their contributions are studied as acts of cultural resistance that reshaped reggaeton’s narratives around gender, power, and representation.

In this course, you will learn how reggaeton’s history is deeply shaped by issues of race, gender, sexuality, and politics. By examining topics such as structural racism, femme icons, queerness, and dance traditions, you will gain tools to critically analyze the genre beyond its sound and commercial success. You will also explore how artists like Ivy Queen, Glory Glou, Jenny La Sexy Voz, La Sista, and Villano Antillano transformed reggaeton into a site of resistance, visibility, and cultural innovation. Ultimately, you will come away with a deeper understanding of reggaeton as both a global phenomenon and a reflection of Afro-Caribbean and Latinx struggles and identities.
