This course offers an interdisciplinary introduction to reggaeton, one of the most influential cultural and musical movements of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Through the lenses of ethnomusicology, politics, and history, students will explore the genre’s Caribbean and Afro-diasporic roots, its sonic innovations, and its rise as a global phenomenon.

In Intro to Structural Racism, learners examine how systemic inequalities in society influence music, culture, and communities. Intro to Perreo focuses on the dance and social practices that define reggaeton culture, exploring perreo as both artistic expression and site of negotiation around gender and power. The analysis of historic femme icons in reggaeton highlights how women like Villano Antillano, RaiNao, La Sista, La Atrevida, Ivy Queen and Glory paved the way in a male-dominated industry by asserting presence, voice, and authority within the genre. Their contributions are studied as acts of cultural resistance that reshaped reggaeton’s narratives around gender, power, and representation.
